Lesson 19: The Dip

The ending of your first dance will be one of the most memorable moments to you and your guests. So, let's learn how to execute the picture perfect dip safely and gracefully.

Don't Forget ...

  • Leader, make sure to keep your upper body straight, shoulders rolled back and keep your weight on your left foot. To test your balance, try lifting your right foot off the ground.

  • Follower, keep your weight your right foot, bend your right knee and extend your left leg in front of you. Imagine you are sitting on a chair. Simply bend your right knee without tucking your hips or extending your leg too far forward.

  • Leader, keep your left arm high to support your partner's upper back. Follower, relax into the position and lean back onto your leader's arm to create a natural looking dip.

  • Make sure to hold the dip for a few seconds so that your photographer can capture this impressive moment!

Helpful tips

  • Practice this move on your own before trying it with your partner.

  • If your song isn't too long (less than 3 minutes), you can do the dip at the end of the song. If your song is longer than desire, you can use the dip as a signal for your DJ to fade the song out.

  • Looking at each other during the dip will make it more natural and romantic to your guests. But if you'd like the ending to be more dramatic, feel free to look at your guests in the pose.
