Learning the Steps

After learning all of the essential dance elements, you are now ready to learn the important steps in the choreography! After practicing the steps below, you can move on to the last section of the program, in which we will show you how to connect the steps. Have fun dancing!

Learning the Choreography

Now, let’s put all of the steps you’ve learned together into this lovely routine! To learn the routine, we suggest you learn it in sections. Practice each section without music first and then with music. Also, watch the demo video and use the written instruction listed below for musical cues. Have fun!

“Belong Together”

Online Wedding Dance Program

Intro (1 counts of 8) -

  • Start on the dance floor, right hand on partner’s left hip

  • Helicopter for full 8


Pattern 1 (4 counts of 8) -

  • Lean for 8 counts; right arms come up and meet over both leader and follower’s heads on 7, 8

  • Bring follower around for four counts; clockwise turn for the follower in front of the leader with a leader’s face loop

  • Slow dance half basic to follower’s left turn

  • Send follower back for 4 counts, pause on counts 5, 6

  • Quick double counterclockwise turn on 7, 8 (music cue is “1, 2”)


Swing Pattern (4 counts of 8) -

  • 2 Single swing basics

  • Cradle to modified typewriter (leader’s right hand on follower’s right hip)

  • Lean for 5 counts in modified shadow

  • Leader connects to the follower’s right hand with their right hand; follower walks around leader on 6, 7, 8

  • Peek-a-boo on 1 (music cue is “you”); again on 3 (music cue is “me”) leader goes under follower’s right arm on 4, 5

  • Clockwise spin for the follower back to helicopter position


Quick Transition (2 counts of 8) -

  • Counterclockwise helicopter for a full 8

  • Reverse to clockwise helicopter for 5 counts

  • On 6, 7, 8, follower stops, and leader continues around to get into side by side position


Pattern 2 (4 counts of 8) -

  • Step together on 1, 2, step out on 3, 4

  • Follower rolls into slow dip for a full 8 count

  • Slow dance half basic to follower’s left turn

  • Slow dance half basic to duo turn


Repeat Swing Pattern

Repeat Quick Transition with different ending

  • Instead of leader coming around follower, follower has a quick clockwise turn on 6, 7, 8 to get into a closed frame


Ending Pattern (6 counts of 8) -

  • Sway in frame for 8 counts

  • Bring arms up to leader’s shoulder to prep for 6 counts while continuing to sway

  • Quick lift on 7, 8; follower jumps from leader’s left to right

  • Repeat most of swing pattern until lean

  • Stay in shadow for a full circle of two step basic (12 counts)

  • Wind up to the left, half clockwise turn for the follower to get into a final dip on the leader’s right side
